Contact Lens Wearers: A Guide to Safe, Beautiful Eye Makeup Wear

By Dr. Nieka Sabeti

Wearing contact lenses does not mean compromising on beauty; however, it does require a more thoughtful approach.

First, always insert lenses before applying makeup. This reduces the risk of transferring product particles onto the lens surface.

Choose formulations that are less likely to flake or migrate into the eyes. Lightweight, well-adhering mascaras are ideal, as loose particles can easily enter the eye and become trapped beneath the lens, causing discomfort.

Avoid applying products directly to the waterline (the inner rims of your eyelids), as this can contaminate the tear film and adhere to contact lenses.

Hygiene is essential. Replace eye makeup regularly, avoid sharing products, and ensure brushes remain clean.

Removal is just as important as application, if not more. Always remove contact lenses with clean hands before taking off your makeup. Use a gentle makeup remover and avoid rubbing, as this can irritate the delicate ocular surface.

With mindful habits, contact lens wearers can enjoy both comfort and elegance in their daily routine.
